Well ok! Here's some more stuff about Nia (spoiler warning!):

She's actually an abandoned princess of the enemy who joins the protagonist's side to fight for humanity's freedom. You see, humanity has been trapped underground and subjugated by her father's rule for many years, but once she is abandoned and meets the story's heroes, she feels for them and joins their struggle. She eventually becomes the main character's love interest. After the heroes successfully overthrow her father, several years pass and humanity prospers on the earth's surface. However, there was a secret as to why her father contained humans so vigorously, and that was to prevent them from becoming to numerous, because their rate of evolution (in this anime it is the power from the spiral energy that exists in their DNA) would become overwhelming and eventually cause the destruction of the universe - the apocalypse called the Spiral Nemesis. Those in the universe who aim to destroy spiral beings (aka humans) are called Anti-spirals, and they had a back-up plan. Once the human population reached 1 million after several years, the back-up eradication system awakened, and the hidden genes in Nia unwillingly changed her into the Anti-spiral messenger (basically the messenger of the apocalypse) on the day she gets proposed. She announces that the humans cannot win against the Anti-spirals, and that the moon will crash onto the earth to eradicate them. She disappears, with much distraught for the main character, Simon. ...After that the story's heroes assemble and face the many crises that happen one after the other, with one goal in mind: to save the humans from this disaster and to rescue Nia, who is now under Anti-spiral control. They travel to the ends of the universe to find her, and battle the leader of the Anti-spirals. After a galaxy-sized epic battle, the heroes win due to their strong spiral power, but it will now be their responsibility to control spiral power to prevent the Spiral Nemesis (destruction of the universe). After winning the battle, Nia reverts back to her normal self. Back on earth she and Simon get married, however since she was part of the anti-spirals who were defeated and supposed to disappear upon defeat, it was only through sheer willpower that Nia remained alive to this point. Tragically, after the wedding, Nia's dreams have been fulfilled and she fades away with a smile (basically dies). Though in theory she could have been saved by the power of spiral energy, Simon decides not to revive her, otherwise that would be too much like god and doing so would put humanity at risk for the Spiral Nemesis again (when humans overuse spiral energy).

Whew that's the gist of it. Gurren Lagann is very good! It's only 26/27 episodes (16 is the recap), but they are action-packed and the plot speeds along and continuously gets better and better. ^_^

Thank you for the fav on my Nia wall. Actually speaking of being a villain, if you don't mind a slight spoiler, she is not supposed to be one in the series, but it's because of her tragic fate that she ultimately becomes one near the end of the series. And the "Libera Me" part is to break her free from that fate.
